A contest held on Sunday May 20th heralded the launch of new surf squads set up by North Cornwall District Council (NCDC).
The council teamed up with Harlyn Surf School and Raven Surf School in Bude, as well as wetsuit makers TIKI to implement a grassroots development structure, with one elite squad of eight surfers and two development squads of 16 youngsters each.
Paul Meadows, coastal recreation officer for NCDC, said that the squads would greatly benefit groms in the region:
"The development squad surfers will benefit from high level coaching from some of the UK's top surfers as well as equipment support from TIKI and will be first in line should a place on the elite squad become available."
He added: "Surf camps in Europe are part of the structure of the squads and will give our young surfers a fantastic range of experiences and skills to really help them to achieve their full potential as athletes."
